  GROUNDBREAKING SOLUTIONS

Zereko utilizes  unique rock breaking solutions for your projects!

PCF - A new concept in rock breaking

  • Since the drill and blast excavation technique was developed in the 19th century, operators have struggled to break the limiting productive rate imposed by conventional blasting.
  • …and 100 years on, the limiting cyclic nature of drill and blast persists.
  • … but a revolutionary new concept in rock breaking has been developed which offers the mining industry a low energy, safe, cost effective method of breaking hard rock in a continuous process.
  • This new rock breaking process is called PCF (Penetrating Cone Fracture).
  • PCF is a propellant-based rock breaking technique that’s name is derived from the signature pattern of breakage in massive rock.
  • PCF is a highly efficient, simple system of breaking rock in a controlled manner.

For the first time the mining and civil excavations industries now have access to a non-explosive, low hazard excavation technique for controlled breaking of hard rock (up to 400mpa).

Removal of mass rock and awkwardly situated reinforced concrete in confined areas can prove time consuming and dangerous, especially if close to existing buildings. The usual application of High Explosives in breaking large obstacles can be hazardous to personnel and damaging to structures.  Zereko is able to offer a safe and less intrusive solution in the form of Rockracker.

RocKracker™ is a new, propellant-based system* for breaking oversize boulders without the safety concerns of noxious gases or explosives and detonators. RocKracker™ uses a composite propellant and non-electric shocktube thermal igniter to generate gas pressure in the hole bottom and fracture the boulder.

RT-5, the unique RockTek propellant, was developed to minimize the production of carbon monoxide and oxides of nitrogen in the combustion gases. This makes RocKracker™ the best choice for underground or other sensitive environments. And, since the entire cartridge is effectively inert until confined in the drill hole, it is much safer to use for boulder breakage than conventional explosives.

RocKracker™ is fast! As quickly as you can do the following four easy steps, you can fracture an oversize boulder and move on to the next one.

1. Drill a 38 mm (11/2 inch) or larger hole

2. Insert the RocKracker™ cartridge into the hole

3. Load stemming above the cartridge

4. Initiate the cartridge

Gone are the large capital investments of equipment and the expensive downtime and production disruptions associated with explosive methods.

Two RocKracker™ 38 series cartridges (38/40 and 38/60) can be used. You choose the right charge for the individual boulder, depending on size, rock type, and any existing fractures.

RockTek is leading the way to safe, reliable, and cost effective propellant-based methods of rockbreaking for mining. For more information about RocKracker™ and other RockTek products that can increase productivity in your mining, quarrying, or construction operations, contact us today via telephone, e-mail, or letter.

The RocKracker™ system for breaking oversize boulders uses gas pressure developed at the bottom of a drill hole. The pressure comes from the ignition of RockTek’s proprietary RT-5 composite propellant, designed to minimize carbon monoxide and oxides of nitrogen. The RocKracker™ cartridge is initiated with a non-electric shocktube igniter. An alternative electrical ignition system is also available, if required.

propellant-based – RockTek’s RT-5 propellant burns rapidly upon ignition of the non-electric thermal igniter
The system was designed specifically for use in underground and surface mines, quarries and construction operations
Minimal flyrock – Cartridges are available in two charge strengths to easily adjust the amount of energy required for an individual shot
Simplified transport and storage requirements – Hazard class 1.4S, UN0323, Cartridges, Power Device
No capital cost – RockTek’s unique concept allows use of the system with a very wide range of hole sizes and drilling machines ranging from hand-held sinkers to large hydraulic track-drills
No production downtime – Generally, no blasting permit is required as for conventional explosives
Reduced noise levels – The pressure generated by the RT-5 propellant is very limited, compared to high explosives
Multiple boulders – Any number of RocKracker™ cartridges can be connected together, if desired, and shot simultaneously (see photo)
Low fume levels – RockTek’s RT-5 composite propellant produces minimal amounts of carbon monoxide and oxides of nitrogen as compared to conventional propellants and explosives
Holes can be drilled at any convenient angle from horizontal to vertically downwards
RocKracker™ cartridges can be used to break oversize rocks in crushers, chutes, grizzlies or anywhere an oversize rock is causing a problem
Electric Firing Option – An electric match can be used in conjunction with an optional shocktube starter for electric firing

High explosives are recognized as an efficient tool in quarrying and demolition. When used on smaller
structures in the vicinity of habitation such use is problematic due to noise, vibration and fly rock. There is also risk associated handling and transportation of explosives.

Advantages:

  • Easy to Use, Store and Handle
  • Compact
  • Low noise
  • No flyrock
  • No vibration
  • No shockwave
  • Reduced operator stress
  • More efficient
  • Highest energy to weight ratio
  • Classified by HSE ExecutiveUN0432 1.4S
Rockchop is all it’s cracked up to be!

Simple to use:

  • Drill a hole (cartridges are 28mm & 34mm in diameter

  • Insert the cartridge

  • Stem the hole

  • Fire

Waterproof and can be used in wet holes or in situations such as hydro dams where at time sensitive breaking is required.
